ROOTED IN POSSIBILITY. GROWING WITH PURPOSE.
Every Life Holds Possibility.
At SAIL — Students Achieving Independent Lives — we believe adulthood should be filled with opportunities to learn, build friendships, contribute, discover new interests, and make meaningful choices.
We create engaging, real-world learning experiences for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our approach begins with strengths and interests, values individual goals, and recognizes that independence takes many forms.
SAIL is more than a collection of classes. It is a community where people are known, respected, encouraged, and supported in creating lives that feel purposeful and their own.
MEANINGFUL LEARNING. INDEPENDENT LIVES.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through meaningful education, real-world experiences, and authentic community connections.
We foster independence, confidence, self-advocacy, friendships, and opportunities for personal and professional growth while respecting each individual’s abilities, aspirations, and choices.
A WORLD OF POSSIBILITY
Our Vision
We envision a world where adults of all abilities are recognized for their strengths, welcomed as contributing members of their communities, and empowered to pursue lives rich with purpose, connection, and opportunity.
We believe meaningful participation in adult life should be shaped by individual aspirations—not limited by assumptions about disability.
BORN FROM COLLABORATION. BUILT FOR LIFE.
Our History
How SAIL Began
SAIL grew from the progressive educational philosophy of Voyagers’ Community School and its longstanding commitment to creating learning environments that recognize the capabilities and potential of every individual.
Its beginnings were shaped by a collaboration with Brookdale Community College to expand opportunities for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities transitioning into adulthood.
Working together, Karen Giuffre’ and Alysson Keelen, educational leaders, envisioned something beyond conventional transition programming: a place where adults could develop practical capabilities, build relationships, explore employment opportunities, and participate meaningfully in their communities.
From that vision, SAIL — Students Achieving Independent Lives — was born.
Growing Into Something More
Through their continued leadership and innovative thinking, Karen and Alysson, expanded SAIL beyond its initial programming to embrace a wider range of interests, abilities, and aspirations.
Over time, the program grew to include independent living, culinary experiences, entrepreneurship, creative arts, social opportunities, and career-focused micro-certifications.
Today, SAIL continues to evolve, with a gifted and committed team of professional teachers and mentors who response to the people they serve, offering flexible opportunities for learning, connection, personal development, and purposeful engagement in adult life.
Our connection with Voyagers’ Community School remains an important part of our story, as it grounds SAIL in a shared belief that education should be personal, experiential, and lifelong.
